Why To Kill a Mockingbird Is Controversial to Some

There are several reasons that the content of Harper Lees great novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is sometimes considered so controversial (and inappropriate for young audiences) that it is banned, challenged, as well as removed from school/library lists and shelves. Racial Injustice The topic of prejudice, discrimination, and out-and-out cruel hatred is not always a topic that we like to discuss with our children. After all, we want children to remain innocent, to be removed and protected from the injustices, unfairness, cruelty, and fear that so often prevails in this world. Children learn all-to-quickly that society is filled with goodness and kindness (or at least thats the hope), but theres also a great deal of evil, bullying and all the worst unkindness in human nature.  To Kill a Mockingbird explores both aspects of humanity. Theres the life-and-death struggle of an innocent black man against the discrimination and barbarity thats not only evident in the actions of their fellow townspeople but also in the pervasive prejudices of the legal system. Atticus is the only man who is brave enough to stand up against the mob-rule, in an effort to ensure that justice is served! He knows that the ignorance that prevails could cost him his life (and/or everything he holds dear), but the pursuit of justice and the defense of innocence is (to him) worth anything he could face. He is not deterred. Sexual Violence Although the lies that are told related to the rape are not explicit in nature, theres still the fact that Mayella Ewell put blame on Tom Robinson for a horrible violation. The indictment is completely fabricated, but even the claim of rape troubles some readers. For some parents, teachers and other gateways to reading, the topic of violation (even in an abstract sense) is unacceptable for school-age children. Physical Violence Its difficult to feel sorry for Mayella because we know what her claims mean to Tom (and to Atticus, as he attempts to defend an innocent man). We may dislike what shes saying (and doing), we come to some acceptance of the psychology of the poor, abused girl; she would do or say anything (in her fearful and browbeaten state). In addition to the abuse that Mayella experiences at the hand of her father, physical violence are brought to bear upon Atticus and his children. In their anger and ignorance, the townspeople attempt to use violence and fear; to control Atticus.Atticus refuses to back down. He refuses to allow an innocent man to falsely convicted and imprisoned, without at least a fight. Atticus says: Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. Its knowing youre licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.   Heres another interesting question; how would the novel be different without controversial topics (and events)? Imagine what the book would be like if they sanitized the novel.

Augustus the Mighty Saviour of Rome - 1750 Words

Augustus first came to power after many years of bloodshed and civil war, and the Roman people longed for peace and the stabilization of society. It will be shown that Augustus achieved this goal through a series of religious, moral, and political reforms, and in doing so, legitimized and strengthened his own position in the transition from republic to empire. Before considering the role that Augustus played in the religion of Rome, we must first look to the situation that led to Augustus reviving religion and the traditional ways. The last hundred years of the republic was full of revolution, civil war and proscriptions, a period of complete anarchy (Halliday 1922: 132). The republic had been in a state of decay due to the aristocrats putting their pursuit of power over the greater good (Shelton 1998: 226). Appian describes in his Civil Wars (5. 8. 67-8), the chaos and violence that had swept through the city of Rome during this period, leading to a complete break down of civil society. Following the battle of Actium (31 BC), Rome was left under the sole dominion of Octavian, who had the same political goals as Julius Caesar but he wished to avoid the same mistakes (Halliday 1922: 160). In naming himself dictator for life, Julius Caesar had set about the events that had led to his assassination, a fate that Augustus wished to avoid (Matys zak 2006: 71). Dio Cassius explains that Augustus aspired to be considered democratic but in reality he wished to have absolute power in

Negotiation Reflective Essay free essay sample

Through the in-class activities about negotiation, I observed the significant influences that different negotiation tactics have on the result of the negotiation in the workplace. In the activity, I was assigned to play the role of manager Dale Williams who is facing with the challenge of persuading two of his subordinates to wear safety glasses without causing any conflicts. The whole play was reflecting and educational, and I was inspired by having an actual negotiation with my employees and also by observing the others doing the process. An evaluation of whether the activity provided you with insights on your natural preferences for different types of influencing tactics; ? Comparisons and connections between: (1) what you are learning and your prior knowledge and experience, and (2) your prior assumptions and preconceptions Before the role play, I was stuck with the thought that negotiation is purely about exchanging resources that mutually benefit both parties. However, my understanding of negotiation has jumped to the next level after the activity since it provided me the insight of choosing the right influencing tactics to match the characteristics of the target audience My preconception about negotiation was delivering the information that I want to deliver and my focus was on what I can offer as well as what I can get from the other party. We will write a custom essay sample on Negotiation Reflective Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Nevertheless, it does not work out well in the activity. Before the negotiation, my natural preferences for influencing tactics would be having informal conversation with my subordinates and hoping that they can understand and obey the regulation, but if it does not work out that way then formal talk with legitimized appeal will be arranged. During the negotiation, I noticed that rational talk did not work at least effectively. Interestingly, both of the two targets promised to obey orally but in fact they were less likely to wear safety glasses because they thought the talk was not for serious. However, based on my plan B, Pat and Chris had been notified of the legitimized rules regarding to the safety glasses issue through formal paperwork and relevant punishment was also underlined. As the results of the legitimized appeal tactics, Pat Taylor obeyed however Chris Johnson refused and a conflict was potentially caused. Although the negotiation turns out to be a half failure, my insight on natural preferences for different types of influence tactics is improved. First of all, before engaging in a negotiation, you have to clearly know what the ultimate goal is for the negotiation and all those bargaining skills and tactics should centre on the objective of the negotiation. Second, knowing your negotiation partner well is extremely important and could play a significant role in reaching the goal. Comparing to my prior knowledge, knowing your partner of the negotiation is definitely a noticeable oversight. Thirdly, after all those preparation work, appropriate influence tactics should be selected to match the characteristics of the other party in the negotiation. For this point, I was much inspired when I saw the others doing the negotiation and they were good at analyzing the negotiation partners and taking advantage of their subordinates’ weakness. For example, one of my classmates used emotional appeal to force Pat Taylor to spontaneously obey and wear the safety glasses by saying that taking the risk of losing the ability to look and see his grandchildren is not wise action and this is because that Pet always talks about his grandchildren. To deal with Chris Johnson, another classmate who played the role of manager chose to use impression management, because Chris has bad attitude which could possibly be resulted from his strong ego, to convince Chris that he was important and the organization could not afford losing him in that particular position so that safety glasses should be provided to make sure of the safety issue. As a result of the use of this tactic, Chris accepted the offer and obeyed. By observing, I learnt that negotiation tactics should be cautiously selected to match up with partners’ characteristics and effectiveness can be improved once it clicks together. To make comparison with my prior knowledge of negotiation, what I learnt is that the focus is not on what I can offer and what I can get, it is about what the needs of the other party are and how to fulfill them. However, the connection between what I am learning and my prior assumption is that the ultimate goal of the negotiation should be the center of whole process. What actions do you plan to take based on what you learnt? In the future, I will definitely utilize what I have learnt in the activity. Before going into a negotiation, I will set a plan including clarifying the objectives, getting to know other side of the negotiation, selecting appropriate influence tactics based on the knowledge of the partner. Particularly, analyzing opponents will be one of my main focuses of preparing for the negotiation since it could help me discover the breakthrough which could potentially help to take the strong position in the negotiation. Because there are quite a few types of influence tactics so that critical analysis of these tactics will be conducted to see the negative and positive results of using each tactics. Additionally, I will try to utilize these tactics in interpersonal relationship to resolve and cool down conflicts among friends or family. What you found confusing, difficult or interesting about the class activity and why; What I found confused or needed to be improved about the activity is that it did not put me into the stage of getting to know my opponents which was equally important to the tactic matchup. However, it might be difficult to simulate this stage in class but my point is information gathering is very challenging and multiple channels could be used in the organization. How you solved a problem, reached a conclusion or reached a point of understanding; I used to have a fight with my friend due to some misunderstanding and I really did not want to end up disconnecting with her. So I suggested sitting down with her and in the negotiation we both talked rationally and both admitted there was misunderstanding. I played the impression management card to convince her that she was one of the persons that I looked up to, and then we made peace again. To conclude, the in-class activity helped me strengthen the skills in negotiation and provided me with a variety of influence tactics that I could use in future. Also, the negotiation changed my prior thoughts regarding negotiation and in the same time it taught me that knowing your enemy would be the first step in preparation for the talk. Through the role play, I realized problems could be solved effectively through using the appropriate tactics for the right partners. To the future, what I learnt definitely could enable me to think thorough and critical when getting ready for a negotiation.

Differentiating for Learning Profile

Differentiating for Learning Profile Learning profiles refer to the ways in which learners are able to process and understand what they are taught. The main objective of differentiation by use of a learning profile is to establish an education system that effectively supports various forms of instruction, which can assist students with different learning abilities to study with ease.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Differentiating for Learning Profile specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The major components of the profile include the student’s learning styles, multiple intelligences, and learning environments (Adams Pierce, 2006, p. 53). This paper is aimed at making out the various differentiating methods as well as outlining how they work. It is difficult to find a classroom with students of the same intelligence quotient. Students differ in terms of language proficiency, readiness to learn, and the ability to understand what they are taught. In spite of these differences, students in the same classroom are all expected to understand and master the contents of what they are taught. Therefore, it is advisable that teachers develop teaching strategies that will ensure that every student learns with ease (Adams Pierce, 2006, p. 56). The leading principle in differentiated teaching styles is that the students learn best when they are allowed to relate their experiences and interests, to what they learn in the classroom. For that reason, the students get to master the concepts in curriculum when the instructors take them beyond the point where they require assistance in order to learn (Turville, 2008, p. 47). Differentiated learning requires an effective planning and the acknowledgement that students with different learning abilities have diverse experiences and interests when it comes to class work. There are various techniques that teachers can apply in differentiated learning for students with different learning abilities. T he first strategy is the differentiated process, which is based on how the students understand and absorb the concepts and skills they are taught. The differentiated process takes into consideration factors such as the student’s learning styles and the standards of performance that are required for a particular age (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 80). In the differentiated process, the students are allowed to learn based on the areas of the curriculum in which they experience most difficulties, or through the methods they feel are the easiest for them to understand what they are taught. Most teachers prefer to use the students’ multiple intelligence to provide the differentiated teaching based on the process (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 82).Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Multiple intelligences make it easy for teachers to categorize the students into different groups, including those who prefer practice in reading and the ones whose understanding is enhanced by manipulating objects that are associated with the content of what they are taught (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 83). The second strategy, the differentiated products, is based on what the student is able to produce in relation to what he is taught. In the differentiated product approach, the teacher can assign tasks to the students in accordance with how they master the concepts that they are taught, or in line with their preferences (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 86). The main objective of the differentiated product method, therefore, is to allow the students to demonstrate their understanding in relation to the concepts they have learned, based on their abilities, preferences, and interests (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 87). The last, the differentiated content, is based on the content that the students have been able to understand. Students are likely to show a varied level of mastery of the concepts that they have been ta ught; some students may demonstrate a partial mastery, while a good number of them may show a complete unfamiliarity with the concepts that are taught, even as some may demonstrate a perfect mastery (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 73). In the differentiated content approach, the teachers are expected to differentiate learning by designing tasks that include all the areas outlined in the Bloom’s taxonomy. The main advantage of differentiated content is that it allows the teachers to easily assign the students the specific content they are supposed to learn at a given time (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 74). The creation of a class that supports multiple ways of learning is done in two steps. First, a teacher should get to understand his or her students. This will help the teacher in determining the strengths of every student in a particular learning area. The teacher will also be able to identify each student’s interests and preferences (Turville, 2008, p. 49). The second step involves the identification of sections of the curriculum that are adaptable to the differentiated learning. This can be done by determining the best ideas for tasks, assessment, and activities that are related to a particular concept (Turville, 2008, p. 50).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Differentiating for Learning Profile specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The last activities of the teachers in the differentiated learning strategy involve adding variety to the teaching styles they carry out to ensure they assist the students in developing a repertoire approach to learning. The most effective ways of accomplishing these tasks entail developing a general work plan that can make easy and enhance the use of materials, space, time, and nurture the existing students’ abilities in the classroom. This approach also involves the adoption of brainstorming methods geared toward enhancing delivery techniques that target visual and auditory students, and the identification of other options for assessing the understanding and absorption rates of each student in the classroom (Adams, Pierce, 2006, p. 58). Scent of a woman was made in chronological order in which the beginning, middle and end of the story are all in order as to not confuse the audience. This movie was made with continuity editing with planning of shots so that cutting to different camera positions would not confuse the audience but let them believe that everything was happening in a continuous ime and space, it was also made using spherical cinematography a special lens used to cover the photographs along with high key lighting to make the actors stand out from a scene along with close up scenes in which the scene drew the audience into the film Goody Koontz B. RFID Tracking Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

RFID Tracking - Dissertation Example Originally developed in 1969, it was patented in 1973 (Granneman 2003). It is a system utilising microchips embedded in a product or item, which can be read by a non-contact reader. It is predicted that RFID will take over from the present-day Universal Product Code (UPC) bar codes in the near future. The problem with present-day bar codes is they are not able to fulfil every function well, they can be slow at the checkout and stocktaking as every item must be scanned and they do not always cover today’s security issues well, whereas RFID systems cover much more from tracking stock to instantly contacting a customers bank for funds at the point of purchase in a retail store by using a system embedded in a mobile phone (Bonsor, et al n.d) how will this develop? What are the good points and what are the negative problems with RFID tracking, there is a lot to be investigated yet with these systems. RFID Tracking Advantages The problems faced by many companies today is how to spee d up their processes, there are many retail stores where the customer still waits in line at a queue for their basket of goods to be read through at the checkout. Stocktaking is done item-by-item using the present bar coding system. With RFID tagging it is possible to have a zone set up whereby everything passing through is logged by the RFID radio reader, and not item-by-item as the tag can be read at a distance and through some materials. (RFIDAA 2006) saving time and effort with better accuracy. Another area covered now is where it has been difficult to have a decent system of tracking passports speedily and confirming the person carrying them. The American and Australian governments have decided to do just this; issuing e-passports where there is a microchip embedded into the passport, because of this there is an increasing amount of information held on the chip. The chip is read/write capable so it is possible to delete or add information on the person or product. A step up fro m the passports issued even by the Australian government. Embedded RFID tags are used for chipping pets and animals, placed just under the skin they can be read easily. Originally used for cattle, now helping with lost animals or with stock control in farms. (Granneman 2003) â€Å"On a smaller level, but one that will instantly resonate with security pros, Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia placed RFID tags in 80,000 employee uniforms to put a stop to theft. The same idea would work well in corporate PCs, networking equipment, and handhelds.† Assett tracking, security and biometric controls are all covered by RFID tagging, it has now got to the stage where it is possible for an indivdual to set up their own RFID tagging system by purchasing the tags and radio readers. There are some great examples such as a handbag designed by MIT students, it can tell if up to five items with RFID tags are placed in the bag. If one is missing then it starts a blinking LED on the outside o f the handbag (Varias 2011). Clothing is a great area for using tags, they can be used by retail stores to prevent loss, they are placed in the product label and are read as they leave the store. Used in this way by Gerry Weber International, a German-based women's clothing designer and retailer. From (Zaino 2011). Problems with RFID Tracking There are many people complaining that RFID and its associated systems are too much. Although this kind of complaint has been around since the first wheel was made
